Kitchen and Bath Design For Everyday Living

The kitchen and the bathroom are perhaps the two most important rooms in the house which is why kitchen and bath design is so critical to the home. These rooms see a lot of the family members and friends throughout the year. For this reason, these rooms should be the shining gems of your home; functional, yet aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

When designing a kitchen from scratch a great place to start in the cabinet space and possibility of a pantry. Cabinet space is extremely important currently. There have been so many gadgets invented for the kitchen that are truly useful that it's easy for your kitchen to become cluttered with them, especially if left out on the countertop. Yet, with enough cabinet space, they can be put away within a cabinet only to be brought out when necessary. If you have room for a pantry, add it without delay, likewise for a walk-in pantry. The pantry will provide a place for all of your non-perishable food items. In the case of a walk-in pantry, you may also have room for some of those small appliances or gadgets mentioned above. This leaves the rest of your cabinets for dishes, bowls, glasses, cups, serving bowls and anything else.

The selection of woods to choose from for the cabinets themselves can be daunting. Hard woods such as oak, maple, cherry make for cabinets that will resist nicks and scars and will last for many years. In addition to maintaining their functionality, they will maintain their looks as well. An alternative that is more budget friendly would be pine. They still make for pretty cabinets, but the wood is soft which makes them more susceptible to damage.

The countertops would be the next consideration. They can range from Formica to Corian to Quartz. Formica is the most economical, but more susceptible to nicks, scratches, and staining. Corian and Quartz are very popular right now, but do tend to be on the pricey side. The countertops that you will pay a little more for will be the ones that retain their functionality as well as their looks for a long time to come.

A bathroom has similar considerations to a kitchen, but there are some obvious differences. It's not very often anymore that you'll find a closet for towels within the bathroom itself, but this can be the case. Like a kitchen, when designing a bathroom you'll have to take into consideration things like cabinet choice and color, hardware, and countertops. In addition to these things, you'll also need to choose a mirror.

Whether a bathroom is small or large you'll have to consider what type of cabinet to put in it. If you've done your kitchen cabinets in maple, you may want to continue that choice into the bathrooms. If your walls are painted differently than the kitchen, you may need to choose a different color stain for the cabinets. You will want to match the countertops to the colors you've chosen for the bathroom or just keep it neutral. Because of the humidity in a bathroom, Formica will not work in there. The humidity will separate the tops from the particle board underneath. You will need to stick to something like Corian for the bathroom. Finally, a choice of mirror and hardware to compliment the bathroom is necessary. These will pull the room together to bring unity to it.

Bathrooms and kitchens are heavily used rooms in the home. Comfortable atmospheres in each are important. Following the tips above with your kitchen and bath design plans will give you the comfort and longevity you're looking for.

Bespoke Kitchen Furniture

Bespoke kitchen furniture isn't just a great way to finish off your kitchen design but also ensures that your kitchen stands out from the crowd and is completely unique.

But how do you go about making the furniture you put inside your house bespoke? Some people probably imagine that they have to come up with elaborate designs and it's a tremendous hassle to conjure up ideas. In reality, it's actually a very straightforward process.

You can find bespoke kitchen furniture solutions by simply visiting showrooms and looking at the designs they have previously created for other peoples homes. Make notes as you go round on the things you like for later reference.

When you sit down for a chat with a kitchen company representative, simply ask them how they can tailor the designs you like to fit in with your kitchen.

Bespoke kitchen furniture can simply be a unique twist on an existing design that you like. That twist might be the way the furniture looks or some functionality that makes how you work in your kitchen easier.

When you're getting your furniture fitted in your new kitchen, make sure it's implemented how you'd originally planned. Stay on top of things and voice any concerns you have. By doing this you'll ensure that fitters don't miss the point of your bespoke ideas and get things wrong.

Having kitchen furniture that's unique to your project doesn't have to be a difficult proposition and can make all the difference to way your kitchen functions and looks.

Contemporary Kitchen Design Advice

Anyone planning a contemporary kitchen design needs to know exactly what they want before handing over plans to designers and fitters.

Just because you want your kitchen to be contemporary, doesn't mean you don't have to consider anything else. You can just say the word and expect designers to conjure up the kitchen of your dreams.

Do you want a warm contemporary kitchen design, with wood panelling and soothing tones? Maybe you'd prefer a more minimalist design with more monochromic features? As you can see, it's imperative to have a picture in your head of how you want your contemporary kitchen to appear.

You should start by considering what you use your kitchen for and how you can tailor this to create a contemporary design. For example, a family kitchen won't often have clean white surfaces and light colours because it simply won't stay this way. Just because you want a contemporary kitchen, doesn't mean you should get stupid and compromise on functionality.

Keeping in touch with the latest kitchen trends is also imperative to ensure success. After all, consider what the term contemporary actually mean i.e. up to date, fashionable, of the times etc. Therefore a successful contemporary kitchen design will be the result of sound research and a sharp eye for detail.

Make sure to visit numerous showrooms and kitchen design companies. Ask them about anything and everything to ensure you are armed with adequate knowledge before buying anything.

Getting the right people in to do fit your kitchen is also important. Some companies might well offer you the world but when it comes to doing the work, they don't deliver what they promised. Always ask to see previous installations they've carried out, in particular contemporary kitchens.

The Bathroom – Keeping It Clean and Healthy

The bathroom is probably one of the most used rooms in the home. It is important to keep it clean and fresh, not only for unexpected company, but for your family as well.

To make the bathroom a place you want to be, it needs to look and smell fresh. Although some people use air fresheners to accomplish this, the smell can be harsh and overwhelming (especially for a small bathroom). A quick mop, wipe down of the exterior of the toilet, and a scrub of the sink will bring a new life to the bathroom.

In our home, the children handle these chores. It doesn’t take them long, it helps me have time for other chores, and I never have to cringe if someone has to use our bathrooms while they are visiting.

It is also important to keep the soap out in the open, and the tooth brushes away from the open. If you thing of all the germs that are floating around the bathroom then you want to expose your toothbrush as little as possible. The soap should be out for everyone’s use. I keep the liquid soap filled. With small children, I have found that diluting the soap with water helps with waste.

For visitors, there is nothing worse than washing your hands and finding nothing to dry them on. Keep a hand towel near or on the sink to encourage people to wash up at the conclusion of their visit to the room.

Keeping the bathroom clean is not as time consuming as some might imagine. Doing the jobs on a consistent time line will make them easier and quicker. The clean room will be inviting to visitors, and it will also be healthier for your own family. With a little planning, your bathroom could become the best place in the house.

Rawhide Lamp Shades For A Country, Southwest or Western Kitchen

The unique look of rawhide lamp shades for kitchens and country decorating has been popular since the end of the great depression when women first began to look at their homes in ways other than utilitarian. This was the case with not only kitchens, but living rooms and later family rooms and dens as well. What is also now called southwest décor and western style as well as ranch style came naturally as the designs sprung from the use of everyday items. The same was true with country style homes. As the wealthier class began to have second homes called country homes, the working class began to use the same techniques in their homes too.

As lanterns and oil lamps gave way to the first rustic lamps it was rawhide that was one of the first chosen materials to serve as a shade. If you like the handcrafted work and style of a bygone area, the rustic texture and color tones of natural rawhide will definitely be part of what you want to incorporate into your country kitchen. There are also a few other elements that will help you create the country style look.

For a country kitchen consider the natural look of wood. It’s best to keep with a primitive or rustic style. Rough edges and uneven surfaces are desirable. If you have a large kitchen, darker woods can be used whereas lighter tones are better for smaller areas. Rawhide lamp shades should be used in any area where a table lamp or desk lamp would be placed. Depending on the layout of your kitchen, a floor lamp may also be utilized. One fabulous feature of rawhide shades is that they are available in light or dark as well as colors to fit your particular color palette.

As you use rawhide lamp shades and rustic wood furniture you will be delighted to see the dramatic impact they make. With these two elements in place the back drop will be set. Now, there are a few other things to consider that will bring the kitchen to life. Along with rawhide, lamps and rough wood furniture pieces in the kitchen, the single largest contributors to a country kitchen are area rugs. Not the machine made versions but real hand woven wool rugs with their rich colors and wonderful textures. This is where you can really shine. You have complete control at this point.

Play it safe with earth tones of tan, cream and rust or be bold and use a rich orange, red, blue or green. If you would like to have a western kitchen flavor just add dark red with grey, black and white. If you feel like a southwest kitchen, choose a southwest rug with a turquoise background or accents. Different patterns can be used around the space if the same color schemes are used. The great thing about wool weavings is they are so versatile. Not only great on the floor, they also make perfect wall hangings because they are of tapestry quality. Place a long narrow wool table runner or a small woven rug on your table as a centerpiece base. Carry the theme to floor runners in hallways, in front of the counter or behind an island. It’s hard to go wrong because woven wool rugs add so much to the overall design with the hand hewn wood and hand laced rawhide shades.

By now your room is coming alive and looking great. It just needs some accessories to give it the “wow” factor and pull the whole thing together. One of the best types of accessory is Indian pottery. Use clay vases on the table or counter with dried flowers or eucalyptus. Native American pottery is perfect for the look because it is usually hand coiled and more primitive in appearance. Place it around the room and use pitcher and bowl sets or painted dishes to set the table atmosphere. Add to the homey feel with hand carved wooden dough bowls, a primitive log ladder or wrought iron. As you will see, all of these elements build on each other for a wonderful country kitchen and with a few variations on color you can also include elements of western style or southwestern decor.

As you consider adding rawhide lamp shades to your kitchen, along with the other design elements, it may not be necessary to buy new lamps. Rustic lamps are desirable but it is the leather lampshades that make the difference. You may be able to use lamps you already have. It’s amazing what a transformation is made with rawhide lamp shades.

Bathroom Wall Cabinets - Storage Option For Smaller Homes

There are a number of reasons why you may decide you want a bathroom wall cabinet. First, you may have concluded that a wall-mounted cabinet is your best choice because it can be attached exactly where you want it to be. This can be important if you have young children who should not have access to the cabinet, or if you have an elderly family member who needs to access it on a regular basis -- a wall-mounted cabinet can be placed precisely where it is the most appropriate in your bathroom. This purpose is one of the main reasons which would make a wall cabinet preferable over a cabinet that is already installed or one that has been built into the room.

Providing More Space

Another good point in favor of a wall cabinet is that the medicine cabinet that you already have may not provide as much space as you really need. As you can find a wall cabinet that will offer you more shelves, and possibly also wider and taller shelf space, you will have much more room for your grooming items and other personal products. You will surely prefer a roomier wall-mounted cabinet over a small medicine cabinet that does not have adequate space for all of the items you wish for it to contain.

Enhancing Appearance

When you elect to have a bathroom wall cabinet, you will also have the chance to add to the nice appearance of your bathroom. As these cabinets come in a variety of styles, you will have no difficulty finding one that you will like and will look great in your bathroom. In addition to being available in different materials, such as sturdy plastic and various woods, you can also choose between a cabinet that includes a mirror or one that does not.

A cabinet will add to the overall décor of your bathroom, and your personal tastes will be the deciding factor. You can find plastic cabinets in an assortment of colors; wooden cabinets come in natural tones, varnished, and with carved designs on them. There are also cabinets with attached decals, so if you would like flowers or other little extras in your bathroom, you can select a cabinet that includes these bright little additions.

Organizing Personal Items

Even if you have standard cabinets in your bathroom, you may wish to have a wall cabinet simply for the benefit of having extra space for your personal items. This is especially true if members of your family have a large supply of products which they would like to be able to put away neatly and have easily at-hand whenever they need them.

There are a number of practical uses for this type of cabinet. It can be used as a convenient place for basic grooming products, for personal items such as cosmetics, or larger cabinets can even be used to store cleaning products where they will be handy. If you do not have enough room in your cabinets, or if you want something that you can mount where it is the most beneficial for you, a bathroom wall cabinet will be a very suitable addition to your room.

Kitchen Appliances - Description of Today's Modern Kitchen

The advancement of technology has been felt in all areas of our lives, from the way we travel, to entertainment and even our home essentials like the kitchen. The amount of time we spend in our kitchen has also been drastically reduced, thanks to high-tech kitchen appliances preserving our food, cooking it in short amounts of time and making washing a breeze. The typical kitchen of today includes a large refrigerator, a cook top or cooking range with a hood overhead, a counter top or over the range microwave and a dishwasher.

Although the main function of a kitchen is supposed to be cooking or preparing food, the kitchen can be the center of other activities as well, especially within homes, depending on the size, furnishings, and equipment. The Toronto kitchen tends to also be the place where the family eats, provided it is large enough and has a table and chairs. Sometimes, the kitchen is the most comforting room in a house, where family and visitors tend to congregate.

A large modern kitchen is still the psychological "hearth" of the home. This makes many people choose fancy, expensive kitchen appliances and there are many options to choose from. French door refrigerators are a very luxurious item, with the freezer on the bottom and two fridge doors at the top. The cooking ranges can be replaced by more modern appliances, such as a cook top that is installed in the kitchen counter and a wall oven mounted inside the wall or counters. This can save a lot of space to be used for more counters or a roomier kitchen.

Manufactures have also improved a lot on the aesthetics of kitchen appliances, offering many color options. In Toronto the typical appliance will have the standard white color, but stainless steel is becoming the main choice for new modern appliances. Research should be done before buying new appliances, something that will suit your needs and style, and online Toronto websites such as http://www.canadianappliance.ca/ are a great start to equip your modern kitchen with the latest appliances.

Tips on Removing Mold From Maple Bathroom Vanities and Still Protect the Natural Beauty of the Wood

If you have maple bathroom vanities in the bathrooms of your home, you should know and understand how to remove mold from them. Mold is a type of fungi that often attack certain types of household materials when there are moist conditions.

The bathroom is often a haven for this fungus simply because of the fact that there is a vast amount of moisture and condensation in the air.
Maple bathroom vanities are beautiful pieces that can really add to the overall look and feel of the bathroom.

However, if they are hosting mold, they can affect the health of individuals in the home. Here, you will learn the simple measures for removing this potentially dangerous substance from your bathroom vanities composed of lovely maple wood.

The very first step to removing mold from vanities in the bathrooms in your home is to first work on removing the moisture from the air. Seeing that most bathrooms have bathtubs and shower units installed, as well as sinks, that can increase the air moisture; this may prove to be a challenging task. The secret to removing moisture is to improve the circulation in the room. You can do this by installing a bathroom vent.

Most of these vents come with a fan. You will want to install them in such a way that the fan pulls the inside air to the outside of the home.

Never place one of these vents in the ceiling. If you do, it will pull moisture up to the attack area, and mold may develop there. When this occurs, it can spread rapidly through your home!

If you find mold on your maple bathroom vanities in your home, you will want to create a water bucket with extremely hot water. You will then take a sponge that is smooth and scrub off as much as possible.

If there is still mold present on the wood, you will want to add a small amount of vinegar to the water that you are using and scrub the area until all of the mold is successfully removed.

Many individuals may elect to use bleach instead of vinegar. You should know and understand that bleach can negatively impact the wood on the vanity. If you want to use this cleaning chemical on the piece, you should contact the manufacturer beforehand to ensure that it is safe to do so.

By using the steps mentioned here, you can quickly and easily remove mold from the maple bathroom vanities in your home.

Which Marble Tile Designs And Finishes Are Suitable For Kitchens

Kitchen tiles that have unique and attractive designs help to fully make any kitchen come alive with life and color. With their unique patterns and designs, the tiles in your home's kitchen add interest and excitement into this part of the home.

To make a kitchen stand out, contrast, and blend in with cabinets, many modern varieties of kitchen tiles are available, with each offering interesting and elegant patterns, and these are easily available in most home improvement shops and home depot stores. Stylish kitchen tiles made from marble are have a unique blend of contemporary and modern designs.

What To Consider When Using Marble For The Kitchen

When choosing materials for kitchen flooring, you should take into consideration materials that are both elegant, affordable and durable. The flooring material, like marble, can be used to accent the counters, cabinets, and appliances.

However, the tiling material must be able to withstand daily wear and tear, and spills as well as heavy traffic. It's vital to select the right materials when it comes to flooring for this area of the home. If you are looking for beauty and durability, making the appropriate flooring choice can guarantee that a quality kitchen floor will keep its beauty and last a lifetime, and using marble helps to better accentuate kitchens.

When designing the perfect kitchen, take note that neutral or lighter tones help to fully emphasize the impression of light and space, as much as darker shades can bestow an air of intimacy and warmth. A floor's finish could also effectively show clearer perceptions of size and space. A marble floor tiles' high gloss finish can help add to the perception of spaciousness, while more subdued or matte finishes can make the zone look quite smaller.

Which Type Of Marble Finish Is Good For Kitchens

Using a marble tile with a light color such as white or pale cream will generally do well when you have a wooden cabinet finish. But, if your kitchen is a high-traffic area, you could prefer to install marble tiles that have quite darker colors mixed through in a marble effect so that dirt won't quickly show, but don't go too dark as the dirt will easily be visible.

These types of kitchen floor tiles are purchased individually, so pricing would be dependent on your floor's actual square footage. These floor tiles are easy to install, that most individuals can lay it them themselves. This will not only help in saving you some money, but it could also serve for a great home improvement project for a weekend.

As most kitchen floors get wet, soggy and dirty most often due to daily use, generally, a small white tile with white grout would be the worst possible choice, because everything would show on the floor and the grout would soon become discolored and grayish. Most interior design professionals suggest using large body marble tiles, preferably with sizes ranging from 16x16 and up, with textures that help hide water spots and dirt, and should not require daily cleaning as much as sooth tile.

Marble can be viewed as a healthy option for kitchen flooring, because it has a dense surface upon which bacteria, antigens and particles that cause allergy symptoms to become inflamed, are less able to reside than they normally would in carpets. Also, in the summer months, the cool surface of marble can be quite pleasant underfoot, adding a certain comfort value to choosing marble tiles for the kitchen.

Bathroom Floor Plans - The Key Points

If you are preparing to make decisions about bathroom floor plans, this can be a truly enjoyable experience. While you may think it will be a time-consuming chore, or a difficult task, actually it can be a lot of fun. After all, designing a room that many people will use, in a manner for it to be both functional and nice in appearance, will be rewarding every step of the way.

The Key Points

The initial key points for your floor plan are the size, and what will be going into the room. If you are lucky enough to be designing the room from scratch, you will have the leeway of making the room as large or as small as you like.

In this case, designing the plans to be at least large enough to be completely comfortable for everyone who uses it will give the most pleasing results. If you are renovating your home, you can still have some degree of choice in the size of your bathroom; it is best if it has enough space to give ease in walking around, and ample space for your furnishings.

The furnishings that you wish to include should figure into your floor plans. If you prefer a bathroom that includes little more than the basics, you must consider the size of your shower, sink, and other inclusions when you are preparing to decide on the eventual size of your bathroom. Of course, if you wish to have a vanity table with matching stool, or other special extras, designing your bathroom on a larger scale from the beginning will result in increased enjoyment of your room when it is complete.

The Right Size For Your Home

In general, the scale of your bathroom should be appropriate to the size of your home. It is not necessary to have a bathroom that is so small that it is uncomfortable to move around in it, nor does a bathroom have to be large enough so it appears to be the focal point of your entire home. When you are preparing the floor plans, you will achieve the nicest effect if your room is spacious enough to be comfortable, yet not too big to be cozy.

Deciding precisely where you wish to place your bathroom furnishings is also important. If you think about it, you probably do not want your furnishings to be so close together that they will seem to be crowded, and therefore uncomfortable to use; but you probably also do not want everything to be spaced so far apart that your bathroom will appear to be nearly empty.

The Perfect Balance

You can get the perfect balance when you design your floor plans with the size and amount of your furnishings in mind, for in addition to making your room a "comfort-zone," it will also look as if everything in your bathroom was made especially for its custom fit.

After you have made all of the decisions about your floor plans, it is then up to you to conclude whether you wish to hire a professional to do the actual work or whether you would like to do it yourself. Either way, the bathroom floor plan you have designed is the best beginning for the perfect bathroom.

Displaying Art in Your Kitchen - A Creative and Practical Approach

You've probably seen many interior design magazines where artwork and pictures are placed in the kitchen, either hung on the wall or otherwise. Although putting art in the kitchen may have its disadvantages - namely to do with oil and grease dirtying and damaging your art pieces, you can still take some simple steps to ensure that your pictures will not only last well into the future, but also help to create some interest in the kitchen. Here are the pointers:

Protect your art with proper framing

Notice how your kitchen areas, like the floor, cupboards and walls, feel oily after cooking? Since your art is going to be displayed in the kitchen, where there's going to be a lot of grease from cooking, you should ensure that you give your art pieces proper protection so that it will be long lasting. Select a good frame and a clear protective glazing layer known as Plexiglas with UV protection to preserve the artwork within.

Maintenance is the key to longevity

It is important that you take measures to properly maintain the art displays. This will include dusting and cleaning with a cloth to remove all the dirt and grease that may have accumulated on the frame or the Plexiglas. Clean the art pieces regularly, about once a week, otherwise it'll be difficult to get rid of the oil and grease after some time. Use a slightly damp cloth to wipe making sure that no water seeps inside, damaging the print.

Display the art at eye level

Now its time to get a little creative - when you hang pictures on the kitchen walls, try to hang them at eye level. This will of course be easier for people to enjoy the pictures without craning their necks or stooping down low just to have a look. If you're hanging art in the dining area, make sure that when guests are seated, they will still have a good view of the art pieces. For example, when hanging art on the wall behind a dining table, hang the art pieces between the chairs at the dining table. This will ensure that people sitting down will not be blocking the art pieces behind them. Also, create a little space between the wall where the art is displayed and the dining table, if space permits of course.

Stick to pictures that are small in size.

Most kitchens are relatively small in size. Assuming your kitchen is a modest sized one, select art work that is smaller in size. Small pictures are better appreciated from a near distance, especially in an enclosed space of a kitchen. Better yet, arrange three or four small pictures and group them together. Because people looking at the art work will be seeing it from a close distance, select pictures that have detail in them - an example would be flowers where the intricate details of its petals can be clearly seen. Small pictures with detail are much more appreciated when a viewer is seeing it from a short distance away, like from a dining table.

Selecting a suitable theme

Choosing a suitable theme for your art display can be a tricky issue. It really depends on the theme and the mood of your décor. Assuming you've chosen a modern contemporary setting for your home, suitable art pieces you can use for your kitchen or dining area could be food related. Pictures of fruits or vegetables hanging on the wall would surely whet the appetites of diners. You can also choose a floral theme for the art display - why not hang four pictures in a square group arrangement, with each picture showing a different flower with a different color. You can of course be brave and do away with all the boring food and flower stuff. Go for an architectural theme instead - use pictures of buildings and structures. If your kitchen is vibrant with different colors that could overshadow the pictures, then drop the colors and use black and white pictures. Make the art work call for attention by using suitable matting to focus the viewer's attention onto the picture.

So there you go! Displaying art in the kitchen may have certain drawbacks on the art pieces because of cooking grease, but with some simple diligent steps in maintenance and protection, you can be sure that your kitchen art collection will last a long time to come.

Bathroom planning and the costs:

Estimate how much you realistically can afford to spend on your complete project. There is no point in getting half way through the bathroom of your dreams, before having to stop until finances allow you to carry on.

Some bathroom shops have deals in place with finance companies and offer their customers the opportunity to spread their payments with 0% finance over 6 months or more, but please make sure that you can afford these repayments, as after this period you can expect to pay back at a higher rate of interest to the finance companies.

Pencil and paper:

It is most important in the initial stages of planning your new bathroom that time is taken to get your project right from the start, any mistakes at the point could turn out to be costly further down the line.

Using graph paper draw a floor plan to scale, on a new piece of graph paper draw to scale different styles of baths, toilets, sinks, shower cubicles and other bathroom products that you would like in your new bathroom, cut them out and place them onto your floor plan. Using this method to plan your bathroom is quick, easy and effective. If you would like to plan your bathroom in more detail there are many bathroom planners online that you can use for free.

Please bare in mind that there could be limitations on where your bath, shower, sink or toilet can be situated due to the location of wastes and soil stacks, these points need to be checked and carefully planned out in the initial stages. If soil stacks or wastes do need to be relocated, please check with a qualified plumber first, before you order your new bathroom suite as jobs like this can be time consuming and expensive.

Changing The Look Of A Room With Bathroom Sink Cabinets

A shower, a hot bath, a makeup station, a rare moment alone - a bathroom offers a personal refuge; a place where your personal style surrounds you with peace and comfort. Whether you prefer design that is simple and comfortable, or high-end and elegant, changing the elements of your bathroom can change the overall look of the room. Replacement of the bathroom sink cabinets especially can greatly alter the look of your bathroom - bringing it from retro to contemporary and anywhere in between.

Bathroom sink cabinets refer to the cabinet space underneath the sink in your bathroom. Generally they are incorporated into the bathroom vanity; the sink, faucet, cabinets, and sometimes drawers offered as one whole piece. In an effort to make a cohesive room focused on a particular style, many people will make use of cabinets to set the tone. Decorating enthusiasts understand that in order to pull a room together there must be a visual focus on which the feeling of the room is established.

There are a variety of styles from which to choose when it comes to bathroom sink cabinets; everything from Victorian or country to traditional or modern. Working within any of these genres simply means choosing cabinet materials that reflect the particular style. There are bathroom sink cabinets that feature sleek contemporary lines and materials and fit well within a more modern bathroom.

There are other cabinets that feature more traditional wood material lending it to a more country or traditional feel. One element that must not be overlooked - in an effort to reflect a particular style - is the cabinet accessories such as handles and knobs. Brushed nickel or pewter accessories will set a tone that is much different than that of painted ceramic or solid wood accessories. Keep the details in mind when choosing bathroom sink cabinets to fit your style.

Bathroom sink cabinets can be found in your local home improvement store where they can be purchased within a range of prices. Simpler designs and less ornate materials can be found at more affordable prices. And when working with a larger budget, you can find a variety of more complex designs and higher end materials to suit your needs. The retailer at which you purchase your cabinet will offer installation guidance for those weekend warriors or professional installation services for those who choose to opt out of do-it-yourself duty.

It's not difficult to understand why so much attention is paid to the bathroom when it comes to redecorating and renovating rooms within a home. For one, an updated bathroom will often yield a significant financial return upon the sale of the home; those looking to purchase a home pay particular attention to kitchen and bathroom upgrades. But, more importantly, making your bathroom what you envision will generate years of enjoyment while you are in the home. Replacing bathroom sink cabinets - an element that creates dramatic visual impact - will go a long way towards creating the bathroom of your dreams.

Painting Kitchen Cabinets to Save Money

If replacing your cabinetry is too expensive for your budget, after cabinet refacing, painting kitchen cabinets is the least expensive option and can really transform your kitchen. Plus this kitchen remodeling job can be accomplished over a long weekend or about 3 days with the right kind of preparation and planning. Depending on the area of the country you live in it is probably not a good idea to do this type of job in the winter months because you will need to have windows and doors open because of fumes from the paint and primer.

Kitchen cabinets take up most of the wall space in most kitchens and because of this by making a change in the look of your kitchen cabinets as in painting, you can greatly improve the look of the entire kitchen.

Whether you want to lighten up dark cabinets or brighten them up with bold colors, paint can provide an instant makeover for almost all types of cabinets. Because of problems of paint adhering well to laminate and melamine cabinets, it isn't recommended to paint these types.

Painting your kitchen cabinets can be the fastest and easiest method to update a tired worn-out looking kitchen and increase the value of your home. Painting the cabinets is a simple and low-cost alternative to an expensive kitchen-remodeling job. Painting the kitchen cabinets can give them a fresh new look.
Painting kitchen cabinets will save you money while making it look like you spent a lot on remodeling your kitchen.

You can easily change the kitchen cabinet accessories such as the cabinet knobs and handles. You can leave the insides of the kitchen cabinets alone except the insides of the doors to save even more money on the job and the hassle of having to take out everything that is inside the cabinets.

Preparing the Kitchen Cabinetry for Painting

First you can begin by take off the doors removing any screws and all the hardware from the cabinets.
Make sure to clean the cabinets thoroughly before starting to paint with a wood cleaner containing orange oil. This type of cleaner is good for removing grease. If there is any grease, oils or even a little dirt the paint may not adhere to the wood surface correctly. Make sure the surface is totally dry before applying the primer.

Now check for any rough areas on the doors and the cabinet base, sand them down, and wipe away any dust or sawdust from the surface.

Apply an even coat of primer-sealer to the cabinet doors, starting in the center and following the grain of the wood. By using primer-sealer you will not have to sand down and degloss the wood before painting it.

Painting the Cabinetry

When it comes to the choice of the type of paint either a high-gloss or a semigloss paint are recommended for cabinets. Some people feel that semigloss can provide a richer finish however.
Use a good quality brush for applying the paint. This will insure a more superior finish. As with the application of the primer-sealer you should start in the center and follow the grain. Two or three coats are required to achieve a good quality finish. The paint should be allowed to dry about four hours per coat. Using thin coats make for fewer brushstrokes and less time for drying.

Once you have all the doors painted, start on the bases. Follow the same steps you did for the doors: sand, clean, seal, then paint. You will not have to worry about doing the inside of the cabinets. It will only be necessary to tape off the edges for a clean finish and just leave them as they are. However
you might want to start thinking about replacing the hardware for the drawers and doors to totally complete your new kitchen look.

If you proceed carefully and follow all the necessary steps, you should have a like new kitchen with a fresh look to be proud of.

Bathroom Interior Design Tips For Beautiful And Practical Bathrooms

The bathroom is one of the most neglected rooms in the house when it comes to looking its best. This room is often thought of as needing to be practical, rather than pretty. Fortunately, bathroom interior design can be simply and easily improved upon without sacrificing utility. Attractive custom storage can help to reduce clutter in your bathroom, keeping your important toiletries and cleaning supplies neatly out of sight.

Hotel inspired bathrooms can give the feeling of get-away luxury without ever leaving home. Good lighting, clean lines, and marble surfaces make the bathroom attractive and uncluttered. A large mirror can expand the appearance of space. Other bathroom interior design ideas for a hotel-styled bathroom include monogrammed towels, attractive wallpaper, and crisp design elements.

When the bathroom is used and who will be using it will inform your bathroom interior design choices. A public powder room will be able to be more whimsical or dramatic, whereas a family bath must be more practical. Guest baths should create a welcoming and inviting space for people away from home. A master bathroom should encourage relaxation.

Be careful to choose materials that will not be damaged by water and humidity for your bathroom interior design. Wallpaper can be used in some bathrooms, but in other, the high humidity can cause it to peel and fall off. Tile is a popular choice for a bathroom, but can be damaged if your bathroom is high traffic. A good substitute for traditional tiles is vinyl tile, which can look just like ceramic or marble, but is not as easily broken. Wood cabinets are popular as well, but again, you should be careful to make sure they will not be susceptible to water damage. Wood can swell, warp, and crack in humid environments.

The right shower or tub is important in bathroom interior design. You should choose one that fits your needs, is easily cleaned, and will not be damaged easily if your bathroom sees a lot of use. Acrylic is a good choice for these situations. Traditional fiberglass is light weight, but can be easily scratched. Cast iron and cultured marble provide timeless looks, but are heavy and can be expensive. They may also require extra support under the bathroom floor. Also, try to be sure that your tub or shower is proportioned for the people who are using it. Very tall people may be frustrated by a low shower head. It is important to adjust your bathroom interior design ideas for the people who will be using the room.

Small Kitchen Design - Small Room Big On Style

A kitchen, no matter its size, is one of the most important rooms in the house. Everyone gathers in the kitchen, but what do you do if your kitchen is too small to hold your family? Can it still be an important room if it's small? Absolutely it can and these small kitchen design tips below may even be able to make it seem bigger.

Many kitchens have a lot on their countertops. There's the cookie jar, the toaster, the coffee maker, the sugar, coffee, and tea containers, among others. If your kitchen is small, any of that you can put away will help add space as well as a decorative touch to your kitchen. Clutter is never decorative, but clean lines in the kitchen can be. Having all of these things in the cabinets instead of on the countertops will create the clean lines.

Believe it or not, one of the keys to small kitchen design and decorating is bright colors whic will help to open up the kitchen. If you prefer the wood grain for your cabinets, the walls can be painted a bright color. A textured look, depending on the texture, and color of the mix, can add to the openness of the room. A soft yellow, sky blue, or field green may be a good choice for this room because they are all colors that are reminiscent of the expansive outdoors. They will help add to the illusion of more space. If you'd rather take on the look of painted cabinets, again, choosing the softer shades will be a nice touch to the cabinets and it will also enhance the space in the kitchen.

If you have wall space and would like to display artwork on the walls, choose just a few pieces so as not to clutter the walls. If possible, choose pieces with scenery of open spaces. This will further enhance the illusion of space in the kitchen while retaining an inviting decor. Make sure the pieces that you display are not large. A moderate sized few paintings add a nice decorative touch to a small kitchen.

Functional items with decorative touches are another nice touch to this kitchen. These will add to the decor while being necessary pieces of your kitchen. A holder for your cooking utensils made designed to match the colors or items in your kitchen will enhance it without making it look cluttered. These are great items for the small kitchen because you will use them often, yet they become wonderful integrated parts of your decor.

A small kitchen is one with a cozy feel. It brings everyone together and strong bonds are made in this room. A feeling of unity within the decor of the room further enhances those bonds created by friends and family.

Hiring A Contractor For Your Bathroom Remodel

The process of hiring a professional contractor to tackle your bathroom renovations can make your head spin pretty quick.

First, there are many bath renovation companies out there. Look under 'General Contractors' or 'Bathroom Remodeling' in the phone book and you will see what we mean…there are hundreds of bathroom remodelers and general contractors in each area. On top of that, there are hundreds of other great contractors that remodel bathrooms but are not in the phone book.

Second, it is pretty easy to go around calling yourself a professional bathroom remodeling pro. People don't necessarily need an office or a lot of fancy equipment or tools to start a business. Therefore, individuals that have done some repairs on a few houses or rooms can try to trick you into believing they are a highly skilled and experienced bathroom remodeling professional. If they have a truck, a tool belt, and a business card they could fool a lot of people!

Finally, there are many different types of contractors that remodel bathrooms. There are handymen, general contractors, builders, construction companies, and companies that specialize in only bathroom renovations.

So what do you do when looking for a contractor to remodel your bathroom?

We recommend:

• Asking your friends and neighbors to see if they have had good or bad experiences with local contractors. Simply knowing that another person has had a good experience with a contractor prior to calling them lessens your chance of hiring a problem.

• Call 3 or 4 companies to bid on your remodeling project. This will help you determine fair market price for your job. This does not mean you should always go with the lowest price. You should go with the company you feel most comfortable with and who you feel will do the best job. If an individual is offering a real low price you should ask yourself, "why?".

• Decide exactly what you want to do to remodel your bathroom. At a minimum you should have a few general ideas before calling a contractor. They can help you make some final decisions, but you need to be able to explain your basic needs before letting them talk you into things.

• Try to decide if your work can be accomplished by a handyman, or if it is more involved. If you are simply laying some tile, painting, and changing some fixtures you should feel confident that a quality handyman could handle this work. If you are talking about tearing things up and changing the entire bathroom around, then your best chance of success is by hiring an experienced general contractor.

• Make sure the company has insurance. There is a chance for injury and for destruction of your house when remodeling a bathroom. As mentioned above there are many fly-by-night contractors that may not be insured. Ask them for their insurance company's phone number and call them to prove they are insured. If you skip this part you could be held liable for an uninsured worker's injury while working on your house. You could also be left with the bill for tons of repairs if an uninsured contractor leaves you with a destroyed bathroom or house!

• Ask if the bath remodel contractor will be able to handle all of the work you require themselves, or if they will have to sub some of the work out to other companies (such as a plumber). If they are subbing jobs out, make sure that their contract states that they are still directly responsible for all work. In other words, you will not have a situation where a plumber installed your new toilet incorrectly and the contractor is telling you that it is not his problem. What happens if you can't get in touch with the plumber they hired after the job is complete? You want one person to be held responsible.

• If your bathroom remodel requires a general contractor, or you simply decide to hire a company that states that they are general contractors, make sure they have a valid General Contractors License

• Always get a statement of work performed in writing. Keep this filed away. Make sure the statements clearly state what work is to be performed.

• Ask if the bathroom remodeling comes with guarantees. These are factors to weigh when looking at the total cost estimates left by different contractors.

• Some contractors require an upfront payment. Agree to a payment schedule (which is a written document that clearly states how much and when payments are due). Make sure your payment schedule is discussed and documented on your contract prior to beginning work. Stick to this schedule even if the contractor asks for early payment. You do not want to get into a situation where you have paid for the majority of the bathroom remodeling work, but the majority of the remodeling in your bathroom is not completed!!...these situations often end in unfinished or poorly finished jobs.

• Check in on your bathroom remodeling progress regularly- try to catch potential problems or misunderstandings before it is too late.

Good luck with your bathroom and remodeling needs!

Updating A Bathroom With Bathroom Tile

Updating elements of a bathroom can bring about enormous change and make your bathroom a place that reflects your personal style and surrounds you in comfort.

Part of the process of updating a bathroom may be the replacement of a vanity, a bathtub, or a shower; but for a truly thorough change, the replacement of bathroom tile can have you feeling as if you've just stepped in to a whole new room.

Tile has so much visual impact because it covers so much of the room. When chosen with care, it can ultimately set the tone of the room and single-handedly determine the overall theme. All elements of the bathroom will then follow suit; working to complement the tile and create a cohesive room.

When it comes to choosing tile, the possibilities are virtually endless; light colors, dark colors, solid colors, patterns, ceramic, stone - you can create the drama you desire by choosing tile that fits within a particular style.

Choosing color is just as important as choosing the actual tile. Choosing warm colors will warm the entire room and give it a natural, calming feel; cooler colors will give a bathroom a clean, crisp, contemporary feel.

Many professionals advise against choosing bright colors, as the tile can quickly overwhelm the entire room. Instead, it is suggested that you stick with a more neutral palette and add deeper colors in the form of accessories.

Bathroom tile is not limited to covering just the floor. The integration of tile throughout the bathroom can pull a room together and add a variety of interesting textures. Tile used in this capacity is often used throughout shower stalls, around bathtubs, around vanities, and on segments of the wall.

You can handle installation on your own but keep in mind that the laying of tile - especially ceramic - can be somewhat tricky. There is of course professional installation which although pricey, in most cases is well worth the money.

One of the drawbacks to using this on the floor is that it can often be cold. But owners have found ways to combat the chill by using complementary bathroom rugs and even installing heating coils underneath the floor.

In an effort to choose the tile that is appropriate for your particular bathroom, do some shopping around. You will find a wide selection from which to choose at home improvement retailers and flooring stores.

Often you can take a sample of the tile home with you to see how it will look in your bathroom; this is particularly helpful because wall color and lighting can significantly alter how tile appears in the room.

The bathroom is a place of refuge and relaxation. More than just a practical room, it demonstrates how you do not have to sacrifice form for function. With the addition of elements that mean something special to you, a bathroom can be transformed. And there's no better way to establish the mood of your bathroom than by the choosing of dramatic and high-quality bathroom tile.

Designed to pamper its owner and create a respite from the outside world, a well-appointed bathroom ideally includes all the elements that mean the most to the homeowner. There's nothing quite as enjoyable as a bathroom done to your specifications; and there's no easier way to outfit bathrooms than by choosing from among bathroom suites; equal parts comfort and elegance and able to set the tone for your entire bathroom.

Bathroom suites are complete bathroom sets that are available for purchase together; they most often include the toilet, sink and vanity, and bathtub/shower. Bathroom suites come in a variety of styles and colors and can be installed all at once in an effort to create a cohesive room. Whether you're looking to create a contemporary feel with sleek lines and marble topped sink vanities, or a traditional feel with a pedestal sink and wood vanity, a well chosen bathroom suite can enhance the theme of your bathroom.

Bring all of your ideas to the table including colors, textures, and accessories, so that whoever is helping you can get an accurate idea of what you have in mind.

Professional installation of your bathroom suite - while somewhat pricey - can be more than worth the expense, as a professional will ensure that the installation is completed with plumbing and electrical specifications in mind. Of course, there are those enthusiastic do-it-yourselfers who will confidently tackle the installation of their bathroom suite, but most people would be happy to step aside and let the professionals handle the work.

Of course in this day and age of the Internet, it is also possible to shop for and purchase bathroom suites online where you can have them shipped straight to your door for installation by you or a professional skilled in renovation and plumbing. Again, if you choose to handle the installation yourself, you must be sure that you account for all plumbing and electrical considerations.

The prices of bathroom suites - like any other furniture - vary according to brand and quality of material. But you'll often find that there's frequent clearance prices on expensive items in which you are interested. It's important to shop around and compare prices; just as with anything else, different retailers offer different prices. Visit some reputable websites to learn all you can about bathroom suites and the prices you should expect.

Outfitting your bathroom to reflect your style and feature contemporary upgrades will have enormous impact seen in a number of different ways; an upgraded bathroom will hold significant value should you ever choose to sell your home; and, in the meantime, these upgrades will keep you comfortable and happy as you enjoy your space.
